Meyer Seals®´ approach to sustainability begins with ensuring we operate our business responsibly, and prioritising the safety of our people, customers, and communities. We also recognise that the long-term success of our business depends on our ability to create lasting value for our stakeholders and local communities, and through the sustainable use of natural resources.

That’s why we look for opportunities to make a positive impact. From building a diverse and inspired workforce and reducing our greenhouse gas emissions to directing our innovation and technology focus toward solving the sustainability challenges of tomorrow. We are working on our own sustainability goals and looking for ways to support our customers with theirs.

Our sustainability framework drives deeper sustainability engagement and outcomes across the company. We are focusing on the areas that matter most to Meyer Seals® and our stakeholders and where we have the expertise to make the biggest impact. Underneath it all, it is the thoughtfulness and curiosity of our people, all around the world, who make the difference. In the year 2020, Meyer Seals® therefore decided to set a milestone in the company's 140+ year history: we reached the highest possible level in the area of ​​environmental management through the renowned EMAS program certified from the European Commission. With our commitment to the EMAS program, we strive towards consistently making a positive impact towards the environment on a daily basis. This includes significant contribution to implementing production processes, processes and corporate decisions in a consistently environmentally friendly manner.

Sustainabilty Products

Sustainability in packaging is becoming more and more important for consumers and has moved into the focus of society.

In response, the Research & Development team at Meyer Seals® constantly channelize their energies in developing and offering sealing solutions to help stakeholders meet their sustainability targets, without compromising on the safety and performance of their products. Our team has developed sustainable solutions and is increasingly using raw materials made from bio-sources. These come from renewable agricultural and forestry resources such as corn, starch, protein, cane sugar and cellulose and do not use polymers based on fossil fuels.

With our innovative sealing liners, we offer customers and consumers real sustainable alternatives and strong future prospects.

EMAS - Eco-Management and Audit Scheme

In summary the three main features and benefits of EMAS environmental management system are:

Performance:
EMAS supports organisations in reviewing the status of their activities, products and services thus finding the right tools to improve their environmental performance. The scheme neither prescribes the mechanisms to employ, nor how much an organisation should do, beyond a requirement to ensure compliance with relevant regulatory requirements. Instead, it provides a flexible approach to improving environmental performance, as organisations assess their own capabilities and set their own goals for improvement.

Credibility:
Credibility is assured through independent verification and registration process, lending credibility to the environmental claims of participating organizations.

Transparency:
Transparency is achieved partly through the environmental statement, which provides information to the public on the environmental impact and performance of the organizations and partly through the active involvement of employees in the implementation of the scheme.

Having EMAS is a validation of Meyer Seals® commitment and responsibilities to the environment. Being a world leading manufacturer of sealing liners for and as a partner of major brand owners worldwide, we have a special responsibility about sustainable action towards a comprehensive environmental management system decided in accordance with EMAS. This means ensuring the correct utilisation of material and energy, waste management, transportation, and closed loop recycling to name a few and, importantly, complete transparency with our direct customers, brand owners and material suppliers is achieved throughout the business. EMAS is a proactive environmental management program supported through the expansion of ISO 14001.

Sustainability Initiatives

Reduction of energy consumption

Meyer Seals® gets all of its electricity from renewable sources. The energy requirement is continuously evaluated in order to derive suitable sustainability measures. In cooperation with expert external consultants, further sustainable optimization potentials are continuously identified and implemented.

Recycling processes in the production area

Meyer Seals® has established closed, internal recycling loops in which new granulate is obtained for production processes. Non-recyclable plastic waste is used energetically and economically, for example by using it as fuel. Meyer Seals® also uses paper and cardboard that are obtained through sustainable wood management and are PEFC or FSC certified.

Consistent protective measures for employees and the regional environment

At Meyer Seals®, residents and employees are consistently protected from odour and noise. For example, the factory buildings are provided with sound and noise insulation, the use of activated carbon filters prevents the formation of odors, and noise reduction measures have been taken on the outside our manufacturing plants.

Increase in biodiversity

Meyer Seals® promotes biodiversity by protecting bees and insects on the company's own areas. With the support and expert advice of species protection experts, we make an active contribution to the preservation of biodiversity.
